9th September 2015 Making a Cock / Double Pendulum Clock with Wandering Moon & Night Sky Planisphere (Read More)

I had been asked to show the making of a cock with all its steps along the way, so here we are. Each cock or bridge in the clock receives the same treatment.

Description;

1 through 5; first the shape is marked on brass bar, the top is milled out, then the rough cock is cut out on the band saw, the foot is milled and the recess underneath is created.

6 through 9; the cock is screwed in place and the pin holes are drilled, steel pins are fitted and firmly driven in with a punch. The pins are cut to length and rounded off, the top of the foot is filed and cleaned so the pins are flush with the surrounding brass.

10 through 15; the desired center for the pivot and jewel is found with a pointer, a center hole is drilled in both the cock and the plate, then the clearance hole is drilled through both the plate and the cock, next the hole is reamed to size for the jewel.
The jewels are pressed in place now we can fit the date rack in place and test the date pinion.

16 through 18; The cock is being brought to shape, first the neck is profiled then the edges are beveled and the oil sink pre-polished.

19; The finished cock, the flat surfaces are matted, oil sink polished and the beveled edges ready for final polishing

20; The wheels used for matting the surfaces.
