David Walter: Life Time

David Walter For the Finest clocks and watches in the world

David E. Walter

David E. Walter (born 1 September 1949, Perth, Western Australia) is an independent master clockmaker and watchmaker based in Buellton, California, USA. Over a career spanning more than five decades and multiple countries, he has gained a reputation for hand-crafted, high-precision regulators, double-pendulum clocks, tourbillons, wrist- and pocket-watches, and historically informed horological recreations. David Walter is one of the world’s greatest horologists. He was born in Perth, Western Australia on September 1, 1949 and now resides in Buellton, California, USA.

He began a six-year apprenticeship in clock and watch making, starting out mainly as a repairer before leaving Australia and gaining work with Garrard & Co. in London. His main duties included servicing elite watches, pocket watches and clocks.

Early life and training

Walter was born in Perth, Western Australia. (Birthdate and schools claimed: 1 September 1949; Bellview Primary School and Governor Stirling Senior High School.) (unsourced — see “Notes on unverified claims”)

He began a six-year indentured apprenticeship in clock and watch repair, and was issued a certificate by the Western Australian Industrial Commission after passing an examination on 24 June 1971. (unsourced)

Following his apprenticeship, Walter underwent further professional training in London, England, and Vienna, Austria.

Professional career

London (1971–1973)

From 1971 to 1973, Walter worked at Garrard & Co. — the Crown Jewellers on Regent Street, London. There, he specialised in servicing and restoring high-grade wristwatches (including elite brands and antique pocket-watches and clocks).

Vienna (1973–1980)

Between 1973 and 1977, Walter was employed as a senior watchmaker at Omega’s head office in Vienna, working on mechanical chronographs and chronometers. From 1977 to 1980 he operated a private restoration business (“Horological Restoration”) in Vienna, servicing antique clocks and watches. According to his own résumé, his first complete clock was finished in 1979 while living in Vienna.

Australia: David Walter Timepieces (1980–2002)

In 1980, Walter established his own firm, David Walter Timepieces, in Perth, Australia. There he restored fine clocks and watches, and began designing and manufacturing high-precision regulators and skeleton clocks entirely by hand.

United States: Buellton, California (2002–present)

In 2002, Walter relocated to Buellton (Santa Barbara area), California, and continued his workshop under the same name. His practice caters to a global clientele, producing complicated clocks, marine chronometers, high-precision regulators, and bespoke wrist and pocket watches. According to his own account, by this point he had made over 200 clocks of diverse design and mechanical complexity for clients worldwide (USA, UK, Japan, Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, among others). Major works and horological contributions

  • In 2006, Walter succeeded in recreating the long-unbuilt Woodward W5 Free Pendulum Clock (“(D)W5 Skeletonised Free Pendulum Clock”) — becoming the first to do so since the original design. Nicholas Hacko Watchmaker+1
  • In 2010, he produced an improved version inspired by the historic double-pendulum regulator of Abraham-Louis Breguet (No. 3671), and in 2012 he integrated into this design a complicated perpetual-calendar mechanism inspired by George Daniels, including retrograde date and sunrise/sunset indications. • His workshop’s “double-pendulum resonance clocks” — extremely precise and technically ambitious — are recognized among a small number of double-pendulum regulators ever built. Hodinkee+2WatchProSite+2
  • In 2019, Walter launched a wristwatch series titled The White — using a vintage movement reworked with entirely handmade bridges, screws and finishing, showing his extension into wristwatch making while retaining his classical artisanal values. Hodinkee+1
  • Walter’s craftsmanship and horological philosophy have been the subject of major horology-specialist coverage, including an in-depth profile on his workshop and work on complicated timepieces such as “DeeDee’s Tourbillon.” Quill & Pad+2Nicholas Hacko Watchmaker+2

Recognition and public engagement

He has lectured publicly about independent horology; notably, on 4 November 2019 he presented a lecture titled “A Life of Independent Horology” to the Horological Society of New York (HSNY). Horological Society of New York

Walter has been described in media coverage as “one of the finest living clockmakers,” whose work bridges classical clockmaking traditions and modern independent watchmaking — especially via his double-pendulum clocks and The White wristwatch project. Hodinkee+2Nicholas Hacko Watchmaker+2

Additionally, he has been recognised by the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers (London) — a prestigious ancient institution — as a Liveryman. Local reporting emphasises that this status reflects a “lifetime of achievement at international standard.” Santa Ynez Valley Star+1

Significance and legacy

Walter represents a rare lineage of truly independent horology: a craftsman who over decades has handled every aspect of movement manufacture, restoration, clock design, and watchmaking — often working alone. According to his official site, all his timepieces are hand-made, with many features (bridges, screws, finishing) done entirely by hand. David Walter+1

Through his creative renewal of complex pendulum clocks, and more recently his entry into wrist- and pocket-watch making, Walter exemplifies how classical craftsmanship and independent horology persist into the 21st century. His work is patronised by a worldwide clientele, and remains an active example of “haute horlogerie” outside major brands. David Walter+2Quill & Pad+2
